Mauritian conglomerate, the Omnicane Group, has launched the Mon Trésor Smart City, a one-of-a-kind project that comprises a multi-faceted development being set up near the SSR International Airport to propel the country towards a new era of modernity and prosperity under the Smart City Scheme announced in Budget 2015.
Mauritian Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth has expressed the hope that the Smart Cities of Mauritius will serve as hubs of innovative technology and sustainable design that will create well-paying jobs for youngsters and bring new opportunities to the doorstep of every Mauritian.
Speaking at the launch of the Mon Trésor Smart City Project by the Omnicane Group at the Holiday Inn Mauritius Airport Hotel in Plaines Magnien, Sir Anerood Jugnauth noted that the government’s objective is to place Mauritius in the league of high-income economies. The island economy’s growth must be marked by inclusive and sustainable development to be led by the private sector, with focus on people’s welfare and progress.
To achieve this vision, the Prime Minister said that the private sector has a key role to play, while adding that the government will create and nurture the right environment by providing incentives, promulgating relevant regulations and ensuring that trade and business is transparent and fair.
He added that it is in the zeal to propel the country towards a new era of modernity and prosperity that the Smart City Scheme has been proposed and the Mon Trésor project is the first one of its kind under the scheme.
The mission of the government is to stand up to challenges facing the country and to come up with innovative solutions. This will require the private sector to rise to the occasion and show what judicious public-private synergy can achieve.
For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Omnicane Group, Jacques M d’Unienville, put the spotlight on the vision behind the smart city project. He noted that the Mon Trésor project aims to establish a modern and sustainable community with a well-balanced mix of employment-generating business projects, supplemented by extensive residential facilities offering activities around leisure, culture and heritage.
