COP30 in Brazil

Omnicane’s subsidiary, Omnihydro is privileged to have been represented at the COP30 summit where Kevin Padiachy, Head of Africa Desk and Krishen Nallee, Project Analyst made the journey to BelĂ©m do ParĂĄ, Brazil in the midst of leaders, practitioners and the community committed to accelerating global climate action.

Kevin Padiachy participated in a panel discussion on the progress, challenges and outlook of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), where airlines are under immense pressure to decarbonize their fleet.

COP30 in Belem sent a clear signal to the effect that there is no energy transition without water. It is fitting to highlight the operation of Omnicane’s subsidiary, Omnihydro involved in the sustainable use of river water to produce clean electricity in Rwanda from its run-of-the river hydropower plant, Mushishito-Rukarara V HPP.

The approval of registration of Omnihydro to the Global Carbon Council international carbon credit and sustainable development program, GCC 2.0 marks the attainment of a pivotal milestone as part of the carbon trading process to trade carbon credits bilaterally between countries under the compliance market which includes Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement and to the CORSIA Phase 1 (2024 -2026) (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) overseen by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

The objective of CORSIA Phase 1 is to stabilize aviation emissions at 85% of 2019 levels mandating compliance for all international routes between participating states. Given the limited contribution of Sustainable Aviation Fuel as a means of decarbonization of the industry, airlines are compelled to purchase high quality carbon credits.

Kevin Padiachy emphasized the fact that curbing the global surface temperature to within 2 degC pre-industrial level can be achieved by promoting both technology-based avoidance and removal carbon credits and nature-based carbon sequestration.

He also elaborated on the importance of Governments of member states to come up with a clear road map to fast track the implementation of bilateral agreements under Art 6.2, where seamless communication is required among all stakeholders and project developers.

Omnihydro seizes this opportunity to congratulate Government of Rwanda and its designated national authority (DNA), Rwanda Environmental Management Authority for being proactive in their approach to foster inclusion of all stakeholders through regular meetings including roundtable discussions held in May 2025 during the signing of the Art 6 implementation agreement between Singapore and Rwanda.

It is worth noting that globally, Singapore and Switzerland are the two countries that emerge as champions in the implementation of Art 6 bilateral agreements for trading of International Transferrable Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) / carbon credits.

The message is clear: Collaboration is no longer optional—it’s essential. Together, we can strengthen partnerships and drive real impact on the ground. The time for action is now.

Our heartfelt thanks to Global Carbon Council for having extended the invitation to us.

MCB Group and Omnicane launch vehicle to finance renewable energy projects in Mauritius & Africa

Port-Louis, 27 November 2025 : MCB Group Ltd and Omnicane Ltd are pleased to announce the launch of an investment vehicle dedicated to the financing of renewable energy projects in Mauritius and the region. The vehicle is designed to finance regional investments in solar, hydro and wind powered projects.

The first project financed by the consortium is the development of a 4.8 MW photovoltaic plant in Poudre d’Or, located in the north of the island. The project is currently under construction and will be operated under the Medium-Scale Distributed Generation (MSDG) Scheme of the Central Electricity Board (CEB), the national electricity company.

The project comprises two solar farms, with connection agreements signed between CEB and two prosumers, namely MCB Ltd and Omnicane Milling Ltd, in collaboration with CalycĂ© International. Built by Ecoasis Energy Solutions Ltd, a Mauritian contractor, the plant will feature around 8,200 solar panels across four hectares of land and is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 7,000 tons per year, with commissioning expected by April 2026. The solar farms will integrate Agrivoltaic practices that promotes food security objectives. The launch phase has been financed through funds advanced by the shareholders and a Green Bond issued in accordance with the International Capital Markets Association (ICMA) principles. MCB Financial Advisers, the advisory arm of MCB Group, structured the financing and acted as Transaction Advisor to the investing consortium.

This initiative shall contribute directly to MCB Group’s goal of reducing CO₂ emissions associated to its electricity consumption. The project, which will result in MCB Group and Omnicane generating approximately 7,700 MWh of renewable energy each year, underscores the partners’ commitment to supporting the Government of Mauritius’ target of achieving 60% renewable energy in the national electricity mix and phasing out of coal by 2035.

The partnership shall benefit from the expertise of Omnicane, a key player in the local energy sector, with a presence in East Africa through its 5.5 MW hydro power plant, of Calycé, a French renewable energy developer with over two decades of experience in designing, building, and operating solar and wind projects across Europe, and of MCB Group, a leader in structuring and financing renewable energy projects.

Jacques M. d’Unienville, CEO of Omnicane Ltd, commented: “We are very proud of this partnership with MCB Group and CalycĂ©, and closing this first project. This paves the way for an impactful solution enabling the deployment of renewable energy projects in Mauritius and in the region.”

Eric Boban, CEO of CalycĂ©, commented: “We are very excited about this long-term collaboration with our partners, MCB Group and Omnicane. Mauritius is key to our international expansion in renewable energies for its excellent governance framework and ease of doing business”

Rony Lam, Chief Executive Officer of MCB Capital Markets, commented: “This consortium brings together the skills and capabilities of a power producer, renewable energy specialist and financier in crystallising a carbon-avoidance project. The transaction demonstrates MCB’s commitment to investing in renewable projects and contributing to the energy transition of Mauritius.”

Omnicane Leadership Conversation 2024

Omnicane and International Finance Corporation

Omnicane and International Finance Corporation (IFC) signed a pioneering Collaboration Agreement. This strategic partnership aims to drive Omnicane's transition from coal-based power generation to sustainable biomass, leveraging on both locally sourced biomass and imported environmentally friendly biomass feedstock. The focus of this initiative is Omnicane's thermal power plants situated in the southern region of Mauritius.

This joint Agreement confirms the Parties’ commitment towards the national objective to reach 60% of renewable energy production in the electricity mix by 2030, in line with the country’s transition from a fossil-based energy system of power generation and consumption to a greener one.

The scope of the Collaboration between Omnicane and IFC is multifaceted, reflecting the partners' commitment to a holistic and rigorous evaluation of the proposed project. Key components include:

  1. an environmental and social risk review:
  2. a financial, economic, and climate analysis:
  3. a preliminary financial model; and,
  4. the identification of climate-focused financing solutions.

Through this strategic partnership, Omnicane and IFC are demonstrating their shared commitment to driving sustainable development, mitigating climate change impacts, and fostering energy security in Mauritius. The Agreement paves the way for informed decision-making and a transition towards a greener, more resilient energy future for the island nation and fully aligns with national priorities and positions Mauritius as a leader in sustainable energy adoption within the Small Island Developing State (SIDS) community.

“We view this collaboration as a transformative milestone, paving the way for deeper engagement and activating further progress towards a sustainable energy future for Mauritius and beyond. By fortifying our efforts with IFC's global knowledge and financial resources, Omnicane is ready to amplify its positive impact and contribute substantially, through innovation and strategic initiatives, towards the vision and set targets of the Government of Mauritius.” says Jacques M d’Unienville, CEO of Omnicane.

“Omnicane remains steadfastly dedicated to supporting our sustainable development initiatives. Our various initiatives, including our involvement in the COP28 summit in Dubai last year, exemplifies our commitment to address climate change and promote environmental stewardship. This agreement with International Finance Corporation (IFC) signifies a pivotal alignment between Omnicane's vision and the National Energy Transition objectives. This partnership not only validates our environmental endeavors but also unlocks invaluable expertise from a renowned institution like IFC.” says Jacques M d’Unienville, CEO of Omnicane.

Mr Jacques M. d’Unienville, CEO of Omnicane & Mr Adamou Labara

Mr Jacques M. d’Unienville, CEO of Omnicane & Mr Adamou Labara, IFC Country Manager for Mauritius

“IFC is thrilled to collaborate with Omnicane in this groundbreaking project to convert a powerplant to complete reliance on renewable fuel sources,” says Adamou Labara, IFC Country Manager for Mauritius. “Together, we are carving out new climate-smart pathways to unlock investment opportunities for inclusive, sustainable economic growth in Mauritius that can be replicated across the continent.”

Mauritius is a SIDS in the Indian Ocean, vulnerable to the impact of climate change. While Mauritius contributes a mere 0.01% to global carbon dioxide emissions, it is committed to playing its part in mitigating climate change. The government's determination is reflected in its ambitious target of substantially reducing greenhouse gas, thus aligning with its international commitments. At the core of its strategy lies an ambitious objective: phasing out of coal in the generation of electricity, thereby reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% by 2030. This move not only underscores Mauritius' commitment to sustainable development but also positions the nation as a trailblazer in the global efforts to transition towards clean and renewable energy sources.

Out of 149 entries across 11 categories, our achievement highlights the successful implementation of our integrated industrial cane cluster. By embracing the circular economy approach, we have successfully transformed sugarcane into value-added products, while prioritising efficiency, quality and sustainability.

Cleanup activity
